We live in an idiotic and reactionary age, don't we?
Most recently, a kid sadly drowned. And now a (shockingly large) group of parents is campaigning for 6ft high fences to be erected around EVERY body of water in the UK. I had to double check it wasn't some really dark satire. But no. That's what they are campaigning for.
Fuck the wildlife. Fuck the aesthetics. Fuck the practicalities or costs. Fuck the idea of responsible adults, oh, I don't know, "supervising children adequately".
@bloor amongst the many things that should be taught at a national scale is simple risk assessments and how just because a thing has happened once it doesn’t suddenly make it a thing that should have the most extreme mitigation measures applied.
@bloor depending on the age of the kid I have sympathy for the parents, I definitely did some stupid shit as a teenager, but it never got that stupid because me and my friends were all brought up to have at least some respect for things that could kill us.
@jon Ben Folds calls them "Cheap Lessons" - i.e. lessons where you fuck up badly but don't die.
