Alright climbing folk, how are you meant to learn how to trust an auto-belay? Even at the sort of heights I’d jump off from a boulder I can not make myself push away and trust what is basically a glorified hoover power cable retractor to take my weight.
From the kids knocking about the gym with their parents this morning it appears part of the answer is “start climbing before you’re old enough to understand gravity”. Some of these kids in harnesses 30m above the ground barely look like they’ve learned to walk.
@jon I’m not sure that you ever fully trust an autobelay, but you get the hang of it after a while. Try the jump off at each hold thing, working up one at a time
@jonathanhogg that was what I was attempting this morning, couldn’t bring myself to jump off any higher than the second foot hold. I suspect I just need to keep trying at it.
