I don't even play Minecraft but the news that Mojang are making the Java edition source open for modders with zero obfuscation is super cool.
I'm still a huge fan of Introversion's old approach of making the whole game source available for purchase as a dev CD 5 years after release.
@gsuberland it's ... not changing much in a practical sense though, like minecraft was *the* poster child for deobfuscation. it has stopped absolutely nobody for almost as long as minecraft existed!
@gsuberland where can I find out more about this? My regular news sources don't seem to know about this yet?
@gsuberland might be a response to freeminer https://freeminer.org/ #OpenSource
@gsuberland source for that claim? Sounds insane to me
@gsuberland has been the logical thing to do for some time. Minecraft as a product has been a sign on, account management and anti-abuse service in value terms not a game for some time. If anything they should be helping people integrate Minecraft logins as a single sign on service for other things :-)
@gsuberland thanks!
@whitequark for sure, for sure, it's just a nice gesture to see.
@whitequark @gsuberland the thing I find weird is that for some time Mojang have published the information to deobfuscate it, and I don’t really understand why. Surely at that point they could just not obfuscate it in the first place and save everyone the effort.
@jon @whitequark given the cash involved there's probably some silly over-the-top legal motivation like defending copyright that they've finally gone and gotten debunked.
