Every new “future of work” startup is trying to fix Slack, which was supposed to fix email, which was supposed to fix meetings. At some point, maybe it’s not the software that’s broken. Maybe it’s work.
@Daojoan you have to remember that Slack was originally a game feature, not really a product. What is it, exactly, without any gameplay to drive it?
@Daojoan no, it's definitely the communication app that's the problem. I started to use the PMWSAPTA messenger a few months back (Paper Message With String Around Potato Through Air). It is compatible with email, slack, teams, etc. and open source.
Benefits include:
- Immediate reply.
- People only contact me if it's really really important
- Management prefers that I work from home most of the days now.
So it's quite good, although I admit it is better adopted as a one sided protocol.
@Daojoan - XTC wrote a song called "No Language in Our Lungs" about the futility of attempting to make yourself understood using language. I believe that that is the real problem we keep bumping into. Making it easier to instantly type words at the exact person you need to type them at doesn't address that underlying problem.
@Daojoan Seems like a meeting to discuss might be necessary. Perhaps we could have a pre-meeting meeting to discuss what we should do in the meeting!
@Daojoan Seems to me that also these companies are leaving out half of the missing mission - "and control the solution".
Slack was supposed to fix email - and control the solution.
Maybe a true solution starts with not wanting to be the sole authority on how people communicate, which may be irreconcilable with building a communication business.
Not sure about email, that may be just because I like writing and think it has it's place. Agree with work. Hate it.
@Daojoan I JUST prepared a slide with „typical tech org mistakes (regarding org development). One is, indeed, technical solutions for non-technical problems.
@WildEyedBoyFromFreecloud don’t worry - HERES MY BOOKING LINK
@codinghorror also true
@codinghorror @Daojoan imagine the disappointment of those early employees. One day you’ve been hired to work on a game! Living the dream! Then boom, “we’ve pivoted, and will now be focusing just on the chat component, and also we’re now selling it to CEOs”.
@codinghorror @Daojoan the game is work.
@codinghorror @Daojoan or as I like to think of it, IRC with fancy branding
@codinghorror @Daojoan It was not a game feature. It was an internal tool written by game devs to collaborate on writing games. The game company just realized that it was more likely to be successful than the game was.
C'mon. This is easily verifiable. Just stop saying things that aren't true.
@thedarknite @codinghorror accurate
@codinghorror @Daojoan i did not say it was a good game.
