our neighborhood and park have been littered with hundreds of small, rugged orange boxes that say DO NOT TOUCH on them. It turns out they’re seismic microphones, and they’re going to be artificially inducing small earthquakes in the park to measure the local ground response.
@0xabad1dea
Despite the signs, I do wonder how many of them are expected to go missing during the course of the monitoring.
@0xabad1dea George Monbiot recently wrote that he's been getting in touch with seismologists to actually solve a very big problem in agriculture efficiency - soil quality, depth etc.
Maybe it's something like that?
@0xabad1dea their plan sounds a bit shaky 😕
@0xabad1dea that sounds the opener for a Bond movie.
@0xabad1dea oo, that sounds quote exciting!
@0xabad1dea ooh means a thumper truck will be around somewhere, they're cool
@0xabad1dea …are they planing to drill for oil under your local park?
@0xabad1dea Ooooh we had that in our neighbourhood a few years ago too ! It was fun ! Seismic activiity was simulated with big special trucks that pounded the ground
@0xabad1dea Yeah, people will definitely not touch them. Right.
@0xabad1dea I touched one! It growled!
@0xabad1dea I wanna touch the orange earthquake box 🥴
@0xabad1dea Let’s hope Odin doesn’t run past them. I’m no seismologist it I’m guessing four big paws are going to generate all kinds of spurious signals! 🙂
@h0m54r they say they’re checking for potential geothermal tap locations (to be clear it’s a really big park; it’s all the land between Amsterdam proper and Schiphol where you can’t put any tall buildings)
@Maker_of_Things they’re chained to light poles etc where possible, though many of the ones in the park are “chained” to a tent peg, so I’m sure a nonzero number of them will be lifted…
