Given the uncertain future of the Dept. of Ed., now’s a good time to revisit “Attack of the Higher Ed Zombie Scammers.”

Self-hosting single user services as a regulatory shield
I like self-hosting stuff for my own use.
And, while I remain of the view that “self-host it” is not the answer for many people, personally, I am a fan.
Most of my thinking about this comes from a mix of perspective: technical, freedom, privacy. I like to control what I use.
But what about regulatory protection?

How UnitedHealth’s Playbook for Limiting #MentalHealth Coverage Puts Countless Americans’ Treatment at Risk
—
United used an #algorithm system to identify #patients who it determined were getting too much #therapy and then limited coverage. It was deemed illegal in three states, but similar practices persist due to a patchwork of #regulation.

Hello everyone and a new #introduction as I have now migrated my account here.
I am a writing about #AIEthics, #regulation and #web related things, sometimes about #UrbanArchitecture, also with #photography
I am also sometimes - reluctantly - commenting on politics.
Well, if you needed further proof that Labour have been nobbled by big business, looks like Keir Starmer is going to require the Competition & Market Authority to soften its approach while he tries to 'rip out bureaucracy' to stop it 'stifling' investment in the UK....
The CMA actually needs to be strengthened to reduce the rampant oligarchy across so many UK economic sectors, not have its wings clipped (further).
This is a major mistake!

Washington Is Giving #Tax Breaks to #Data Centers That Threaten the State’s Green #Energy Push
==
In 2019, #Washington adopted legislation requiring electric utilities to go carbon-neutral in a decade.
Yet lawmakers continued to promote the growth of energy-guzzling data centers with generous tax incentives.

The risks around artificial intelligence might be better understood by following the money not the technology....
This suggests we need to be regulating (better) the economic & market uses of AI, rather than focussing on its technical capabilities.
Indeed, states have a long history of regulating markets, and whatever some economists seem to think, regulation is what has most often saved capitalism from eating itself!

Awesome talk on how we can push back against Big Tech
#introduction post!
I'm an interdisciplinary researcher, mainly in #computerscience but also a bit of #law, #philosophy, and a pinch of #STS. I study #privacy, #dataprotection, algorithmic decision-making, 'fair' ML/AI, #decentralisation, #security, #regulation of and by technology; hoping to gradually add #climatejustice to my bag of interests.
I build #Enigma machines. I don't know why (https://www.reubenbinns.com/blog/enigma-machine-version-2/)
I live in London and work in Oxford.
