I captured this cute Short-eared Owl amidst tall grasses after a successful hunt and while eating sticking his pink tongue out, like he was teasing me.
They migrate to our area, concentrating mainly at the fields of Skagit Valley/ Samish Flats in the state of Washington, hunting at dusk and dawn close to the ground, relying on their acute hearing to find their prey (voles, small birds).
Sometimes it is hard to notice them not just because they're rather smallish, but because the intricate patterns of their feathers blend with the earthy tones of the surroundings, camouflaging well.

Okay, bird sanctuary photos incoming: First up, a Barn Owl! No barns around, so it was looking understandably lost.

the barn owl is now making a turn to its left, which is causing its wings to be entirely backlit by the sun, and the tips of the wing feathers are glowing with the sunlight

the barn owl is now flying higher, such that the background is the featureless sky, which had to be over-exposed to expose the owl properly

A parent barred owl perching on a moss covered branch with a mole hanging in their beaks, leaning down to their baby owl, who is perching on a thin branch below and giving the mole to them. Most of the branches are covered with moss.
