Last week, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman
announced his ambitious plan for the World project, formerly known as Worldcoin.

The company opened 6 stores where people can go to get their biometric data collected from a creepy iris scanner called The Orb.

But this isn't just a cryptocurrency grift anymore, this is much more dystopian.

In this article, I describe the risk of using such service, the unethical practices the World project has been employing to gather numbers, and how this is a slippery slope towards the normalization of mass surveillance we should all worry about.

Say NO to the Orb!

The AI craze in higher education has no bounds and knows no shame.

Today we received a message from our education working group (who are all regular academics, not EduTech hires). An invite to a workshop on genAI and its wonderful uses in teaching, personal tutoring, assessment, you name it. There's the token reference to risks and potential dangers, but the tenor is unbridled enthusiasm.

The invite comes with a picture of this very workshop, which (quick look at the calendar) is still in the future.

The future genAI workshop is being advertised by a genAI image of itself.

My colleagues collectively have lost the plot.

This one was inspired by a tweet I saw a few years ago, something along the lines of “machine learning is the radium salts of the twenty-first century”. This joke is more relevant than ever; corporations are trying to squeeze “AI” into every role imaginable, no matter that it’s mostly useless and often harmful.

Been slacking posting more art here, so time for a teensy selection of an old generative/evolutionary system from 2014 (then used for my HOLO 2 magazine guest design). Originally written in Clojure, meanwhile ported to TypeScript & Zig, I've kept working on & experimenting with it ever since... 1000s of screenshots and 100s of versions to sift through. Loosely based on research done by Barricelli[1] since the early 1950s, conceptually and aesthetically it sits nicely between my C-SCAPE and De/Frag and has a similarly huge design space to explore (in some versions coupled with genetic programming to evolve cell replication rules)... There's a 1500 word draft blog post from back then too, which goes into more detail and history of this approach. Maybe its time to publish that one too at last... :)

My son liked to post his pixelart on Pixel Studio's Pixel Network and apparently the dev just changed the terms and conditions so that the art you publish can become part of a training dataset for a new AI pixel-art generation app. You can’t even opt-out if you’re using the mobile app. They also started allowing AI art to be posted.

My son is so demotivated by this.

That's how you kill creativity. And I really hope your business too.
