“Democracy or capitalism? Pick one.
If, like me, you grew up in the 80s, you probably unthinkingly accepted the neoliberal maxim that democracy and capitalism go hand-in-hand. This is one of the greatest lies ever told. Democracy and capitalism are polar opposites.
You cannot have a functional democracy and billionaires and trillion-dollar corporate interests and Silicon Valley’s Big Tech misinformation and exploitation machinery. What we’re seeing is the clash of capitalism and democracy and capitalism is winning.
Are we past a tipping point? I don’t know. Perhaps. But we can’t think like that.
Personally, I’m going to keep working to effect change where I feel I can be effective: in creating alternative technological infrastructure to support individual freedoms and democracy.
We’ve already laid the infrastructure of techno-fascism. We’ve already created (and are creating) the panopticons. All the fascists need to do is move in and take the controls. And they will do so democratically, before destroying democracy, just as Hitler did.
And if you think the 1930s and 40s were something, remember that the most advanced tools to amplify the destructive ideologies of the time were less powerful than the computers you have in your pockets today. Today we have machine learning and are on the brink of unlocking quantum computing.
We must ensure the 2030s are not like the 1930s. Because our advanced centralised systems of data capture, classification, and prediction plus a hundred years of exponential increase in processing power (note: I do not use the word “progress”) mean the 2030s will be exponentially worse.
Whoever you are, wherever you are, we have a common enemy: the nationalist international. The problems of our time transcend national borders. The solutions must also. The systems we build must be both local and global at once. The network we must build is one of solidarity.
We created the present. We will create the future. Let’s work together to ensure that that future is the one we want to live in ourselves.”

Once Domain is released and we have the first Small Web host running on small-web.org – hopefully the first of many that will be run by other folks in the future – and we start taking commercial sign-ups for Small Web places, we should eventually have the money problem solved (because apparently that’s a problem you have to solve to gain the privilege of working for the common good in our world because our system is unabashedly shortsighted).

There's a lot of cheerleading for commercial #ai as a benefit to #legalaid & for #accesstojustice.
But there's risk that commercial ai will crowd out public interest ai --- #OpenSourceAI, #opendata.
The marketing for commercial ai also buries the lede that vendors are enriched from training its ai on legal aid work product and clients.
We shouldn't elide the #ethics risks of #lawyer #acquiesence to commercial ai.

I see this instance has a *nice* *long* character limit for posts.
I have a Ph.D. in Human Science (2016, Saybrook University), which is about the experience of being human in social contexts. It is the mother of the social sciences but is now, at least in the English speaking world, and at least as far as I can tell, a dead field.
I studied #conservatism for my #dissertation. And yes, the #Democrats are far too #conservative for me.
Once upon a time, a very, very long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was a computer programmer. It was the wrong career choice.
I am a #vegan #LibertarianSocialist (recovering #anarchist) mostly from the #SanFrancisco #BayArea in #California, presently residing in #Pittsburgh, #Pennsylvania, hoping to move to #erie
In #kyriarchy, I mostly focus on #classism and #ageism, but since arriving in Pittsburgh, have been confronted with blatant #racism (and yes, many white people here do see it). But #SocialJustice has to be for everybody; to focus on any one identity, to the exclusion of others, is nothing more than to elevate that identity over that of the predominantly wealthy white males who are now in charge.
I oppose all #imperialism and #SettlerColonialism, not just U.S. and NATO imperialism and settler-colonialism. Having lived on the underbelly of #capitalism most of my life, I am #anticapitalist and ferociously opposed to #neoliberalism. I oppose physical and structural violence.
Human beings have #HumanRights. These rights are not constrained by their governments' failures to ratify certain human rights treaties.
#Borders exist to mark off territory controlled by elites whose competition accounts for most if not all wars and to deny human beings on the "wrong" side of an arbitrary line rights and privileges available on the "right" side. This cannot be justified ethically. I am hostile to #xenophobia
Finally, I am pessimistic about the future of humanity. #COVID19 and the #ClimateCrisis demonstrate our unfitness for survival.

First came the activity then the ideology to defend/legitimize the activity, then the critical analysis.
In the same manner, its evolution (dialectic) came first as reaction to its enemies, then ideas to legitimize its reaction (#fascism - #neoliberalism) but the critical analysis of what it is has yet to appear.
It is awaiting a new Marx and Engels, although dialectical materialism still holds as the foundation of all critical thought.
If I could magically make one (feasible) change to improve the world, I'd make neoliberal BS an elective class in #economics rather than the cornerstone of the only #econ course most people ever take.
Like, I get that #neoliberalism is important to give tech and finance bros a way to justify their obnoxious self-interest, but I wish more people were exposed to the things most economists are actually doing these days.
Financially the goal achieved through the pandemic "crisis" was for EU/GB/US to find an excuse to produce currency (trillions) without issuing debt, and without the freedom of other nations to do the same without facing major devaluation.
In other words those handful of nations robbed the rest of the planet, by controlling "markets" they present as "free". Then they used those trillions to feed the fat cats (banks/industries) and passed the tab to working stiffs of the world
