Silhouetted Cypresses

Shooting sunsets along the Northern California Coast can be a real challenge. Many times the low lying fog covers up the sun. This is more likely to happen during the warm summer months when you would like to spend time at the ocean. I caught this during the late spring. Captured along the California Coast near Monterey.

Silhouetted Cypresses

I captured this image along the California Coast just south of Monterey.
The foreground consists of some coastal cypress trees. The trees are black. The branches of the trees reach out in wind blown angles.
The backdrop is a California sunset. The brightest portion of the sun is mostly blocked by some of the tree branches. From that bright spot outwards the sky turns yellow, then orange and finally a brilliant red as the low clouds make their way onto the coast.

A coworker says the only way to get out of the tunnel traffic in Monterey during the summer is to bike.

I was once stuck in it: 1h (0.5 miles). Never again. Walking it is nicer, and you can also look at the sunset over the water.

Looking forward to all my bike rides there this summer. (Many people don’t live locally. They have to go to San Jose or Santa Cruz, and during rush hour it can be as long as my off-peak commute back to San Francisco). There’s only one tunnel in and out of New Monterey, where the Aquarium is

I just posted this at work and it seems like not everyone knows this.

You can take the Amtrak Coast Starlight from Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose or LA in the other direction, to the Monterey Bay aquarium. On Amtrak.com, simply put Monterey Bay Aquarium as your destination and when you arrive in Salinas station at 12:20pm (daily), there will be a bus that waits for you and picks you up to send you to the doors of the Aquarium by 1:30pm (usually takes just 20min)

For a true car-free experience, book a hotel room in New Monterey near the Aquarium, like the Clement Intercontinental, Monterey Plaza, or Wave Street Inn or anything on that side of the tunnel (including Pacific Grove). You can walk / bike the coastal trail.

Rent a bike from Work Horse bicycles downtown.

If you bring your own bike on the train (check in without boxing!) you can put it on MST city bus no 20, the bus station is 5 min ride away. Wait at and have a taco at Tacos Don Beto next door. There is a small outdoor area for Covid cautious folks.
