A3: My current small makes have been 1:12 scale but previously I have worked at larger 3:4 and 1:1 scale.
I have gone down as small as 1:100 once, working with Sue, but I think my making at scale will simply adjust to suit the space and funds available.

I have just done the #MakersHour questions for this week. Due to having my laptop worked on I was a bit too busy over the weekend to do it, so all done on the (Marty Mc)Fly this week. You'll be able to tell I am currently reading the 'Back To The Future' series of books. 😉

I am off to a medical centre this morning to have a CT scan.
I am assuming it will not show up anything of concern.

What I do the rest of the day will depend on how I feel afterwards, and if I just want to run away, or sleep, or something.

I do need to do some miniaturing for this diorama, though.

I suspect we’ve all made something to improve our toolbox/workspace - please tell us what you’ve done and share pictures!

A5: I used a range of mismatched tool cases and it meant cases would get dropped, would open in transit, were difficult to carry and stack, some would have fiddly latches and fragile lids and covers leaving sections out of use, they had funny shapes, wouldn’t tessellate in the car boot, and generally frustrating to use.

My main improvement was when I decided to standardise on a set of tool cases. The case are of the same format, though different sizes and internal fitments. The lids latch tightly, they stack, lock together, are really tough, and can be stood on. The main case has wheels and a trolley handle, and it means I can transport tools from one place to another more easily.

What got you into your creative field? Did someone teach you, are you self-taught, or, both?

A3: Lego, and wanting toys that I either could not find, or afford to buy.

I was encouraged by my parents to make toys, but for woodwork I was initially taught by a carpenter on one of Dad’s building sites when I was really far too little to be there. It was safer that I was left playing in wood shavings than metal, bricks, and cement. The carpenter taught me to cut wood and use a hole saw to cut out wheels to make toy cars. From there I was mostly self taught but then studied engineering, welding and furniture making, among other building trade skills.

Is your making/creating/crafting your job or a hobby? Is it a side-gig? And does that change how you think about your projects?

A2: For me over the last 50 years, it has been a hobby, a job, a hobby, a job again, a side gig, and a hobby. I have learnt that I’d rather make for fun, as financial income can be much less stressful coming from other sources.
Also, making for fun is good for my mental health, whereas making for money is not.

As Adam Savage says, ‘Bullshit jobs’, jobs that are not bullshit, but don’t really matter to the person doing it as they are just for paying the bills.

A3: I'm in awe of those who create their own drawings and designs from scratch. I love replicating costumes and props from movies/TV/games, but I find the prospect of starting something completely original to be terrifying.
