I have a huge favour to ask! If anybody owns #Asus #laptop, I need screenshots from #ArmouryCrate! Specifically, min and default values of sliders for CPU, GPU and Mid on battery and plugged in. Please share it with friends to increase the reach and help us gather as much data as possible! #PC
1/2
for reference I'm looking for
- 512GB+ storage
- 8GB+ RAM (preferably 16GB)
- 15 inches or higher!!!
- something equivalent to or better than a 10th gen i5
- preferably not plastic because I'm scared of it cracking again but still
fingerprint sensor would be really cool but not necessary. I prefer fuller keyboards (i.e. with a numpad) but I could compromise here

[Middle Click] via 3-finger-tap is having me open inadvertently closed Firefox tab again when trying to PIN it via [Right Click] (for context menu (so much for context🙄)) via 2-finger-tap .
- Curses HP #EliteBook640G11 with only 2 mouse buttons! A external 3-button mouse would be an improvement this time.
On that note am still getting familiar with the keyboard layout with square & relatively taller (x-y plane) keys than on #LogitechK845 keyboard or on #ThinkPadX260.

Is there anyone who's going to #college and/or does a bunch of #programming in systems programming languages with some #laptop reccomendations? I don't exactly want to fall inside a HP-esque walled garden again... My budget is that of a student, between 600-1000 euros, so no System76 laptop for me sadly
🆕 blog! “Review: dbrand skin for FrameWork laptop”
★★★★⯪
I love putting stickers on my laptops. But when it's time to move to a different laptop, what happens to all those cool stickers? After spending too many nights with a scraper and isopropanol, I decided to get a pre-cut dbrand skin. It'll protect the laptop and it will peel off in one piece, allowing […]

More thoughts on adding NFC to the Framework Laptop
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2024/06/more-thoughts-on-adding-nfc-to-the-framework-laptop/
I've got a fancy new Framework laptop. It comes with little expansion sockets - which allow you to plug in USB devices, HDMI ports, Ethernet cables, and all sorts.
I want to add an NFC reader to it.
So, step one was to find an NFC circuit board which worked with the hardware and was relatively small.
Enter the ACM1252U-Z2. It works perfectly with Linux. It has a USB-Micro socket - but a USB-C OTG cable allowed it to work with the Framework.
It is about as small as they come - but will it fit?
Thanks to Alexey for sending me some 3D printed samples of the Framework expansion plugs, I was able to make a bit of progress.
The board is slim enough in height and width to fit into to the casing:
But it will stick out rather alarmingly:
It's useful to have the antenna that far out - but I'm worried about bumping it.
What about under the casing of the main laptop? There are two spacer units which can be removed, and there is access to the internal USB connectors under the numpad.
Will it fit? The answer, again, is… oooh! Just about!
If the trackpad was moved left, there'd be plenty of room horizontally.
It will still need something sturdy covering it - and that will need to be transparent to RF.
So here are my next thoughts:
Can I (or someone else) desolder the USB-Micro plug and solder on a USB-C OTG plug?
Is having a protruding expansion going to be annoying or dangerous?
How hard would it be to replace the spacer and wire directly into the vacant USB pins under the numpad?
If you have answers to these questions - please drop a comment in the box.

🆕 blog! “Review: Framework 16 Laptop”
★★★★⯪
Several years ago, I purchased a Clevo N151CU laptop with the idea that I'd gradually upgrade the RAM, storage, and other bits. After my keyboard failed, I found it difficult to find replacement parts. The whole point of the Framework laptop is that it is specifically designed to be modular. It come in kit form, […]

OK... I pulled the trigger.
I ordered the System76 Lemur Pro laptop, and made it juicy.
I'm tired of running Linux on Windows hardware and draining batteries dry. I want a laptop that was made to run Linux, and a Linux distro made to run on that hardware.
It's like a Mac that way -- a hardware/OS pairing from the same manufacturer.
It helps that I've been running Pop!_OS for years on Dell hardware -- desktop and laptop -- and love it, already.

Did you write code for #Psion machines in the #80s and #90s?
We're calling for you to open source your code!
I'm working with a group of enthusiasts, building a library of information about the SIBO/EPOC16 platform. Your old code could give valuable insight, as well as encourage people to write new code.
We're especially interested in old C and #x86 #assembly.
Upload it to your public repository of choice, and set it free!

So as an update to my blog post last week about my latest batch of #linux #laptop drama - I am happy to say that I have selected and received my replacement for the #system76 Pangolin with the craptacular touchpad: Last years #lenovo Thinkpad P16s with an AMD Ryzen Pro 6850U.
This laptop was a flyer because I had to purchase it from a third party seller on Amazon as Lenovo doesnt sell it anymore as the gen 2 units are now out. Plus it has soldered on Qualcomm wifi.
But wow. It works great!
