(Pure) capitalism is an economic system with division of labor and private ownership (not only of the means of production, but) of all human property, including the means of production, consumer goods, and man himself and products of his labor. The logical and economic consequence of such a preposition is that capitalism is naturally beneficial not only for capitalists and entrepreneurs, but for everyone, for all the people in society.

I'm seeing many people ask questions like "where are the people who are supposed to stop this?" and "what can *I* do about this?" I believe this sentiment is a symptom of the way our institutions are structured to deny us the lived experience of direct action.
The structures of liberal and capitalist institutions have so deeply taken over that most people in the US never even interact with a directly democratic institution, let alone become accustomed to making decisions that way.
I think there's a psychological consequence to never making decisions together in an assembly. We only ever experience taking and giving orders, buying products, and casting votes. We never learn the skills needed to act for ourselves, together. We never feel what it's like to build power together. We don't even know how to begin because we don't have an institutional toe-hold in our neighborhoods or workplaces. Our institutions have left us atomized and disempowered and we feel that helplessness in times like this.
What is Marxism-Leninism-Maoism Basic Course: Part 1
This document is written by the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and is used as a study guide for their cadre. It is an exemplary summary and outline of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism and the history of the International Communist Movement.

Fifty years ago, if the right decisions had been made, today might look very different. We likely would not be talking about a climate crisis or a climate emergency.
But the right decisions were not made then. Instead, our capitalist rulers pushed ahead with their growth-at-any-cost mantra. And now we face certain disaster.
There are still actions to be taken, a struggle to be waged, in hopes of making the collapse of society slightly less costly for some people in some places. We must engage in that fight.
But suffering is inevitable, great suffering, both for humans and for the natural environment that our industry and our consumerism are in the process of destroying.

Reading Marx is like unearthing the Necronomicon in a university library, a forbidden text that lays bare capitalism's inner workings.
But the true horror lies in realizing you're surrounded by people who treat exploitation as 'just how things work.' Suddenly the world reveals itself as a self-sustaining asylum, where the so-called 'rational' diligently reproduce the madness of the system.
Consumer debt is a private tax on being poor.
If you simply raise prices so high that people must borrow in order to access basic goods and services, then you can also collect rents on their obligatory borrowing.
For example:
1) The state makes jaywalking a crime and builds car-dependent infrastructure, forcing everyone to purchase cars in order to access basic facets of life.
2) Car sellers can raise prices on cars, which are now obligatory to own.
3) Lenders can then extend credit to purchasers to finance these obligatory cars, collecting free rents off this artificial obligation.
4) Car sellers and lenders then merge, allowing the same capitalist to profit off the inflated sale price and your inability to pay for that inflated price out of pocket.
The public-facing idea of capitalism consists of two utterly irreconcilable facets: voluntary production and exchange, on the one hand, and private ownership, on the other.
We cannot be free—to produce, to exchange, to do *anything at all*—if only some of us own the world and everything in it.
Capitalists own the land under your feet. They own the power to tell you whether you can work, and how to work, and how much of what you produce they will keep for themselves. They own the ideas we produce, our songs and stories. They own our mobility, our communications, our sustenance. We cannot be free if we live only by their permission.
Well, there's a headline that certainly captures the moment: Big banks predict catastrophic warming, with profit potential.
“We now expect a 3°C world,” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote earlier this month."
"The stunning conclusion indicates that the bank believes the planet is hurtling toward a future in which severe droughts and harvest failures become widespread, sea-level rise is measured in feet rather than inches and tropical regions experience episodes of extreme heat and humidity for weeks at a time."
"Morgan Stanley’s climate forecast was tucked into a mundane research report on the future of air conditioning stocks, which it provided to clients on March 17."

My blog, misaligned markets is named so because market capitalism has caused markets to become misaligned from the purpose they're supposed to serve. But what is misalignment?
Read about Aristotle's great insight about greed and how it applies to everything from money to climate change.
This is the class solidarity I am here for.

Just saw this cartoon posted on the enshittified, dying legacy blogging platform a few worthwhile writers still use. The article says the cartoon is banned on the enshittified, dying legacy social media platform still used by a few worthwhile people - and a lot more worthless ones. (Hint: it's now owned by the cartoon's subject, Cylon Musk.)
Good cartoon, imo.

The Golden Age of American Capitalism and The Death of American Capitalism
"Under capitalist structures that tie people’s worth to their productivity, where value is determined largely by how productive you are, ableism is used to frame disability, "non-productivity" as a terrifying identity to hold. Ableism therefore doesn’t only affect disabled people but affects everyone: we are all being judged on our ability/inability to be a good productive and obedient worker for the capitalists/fascists."

I wrote this five years ago:
“Democracy or capitalism? Pick one.
If, like me, you grew up in the 80s, you probably unthinkingly accepted the neoliberal maxim that democracy and capitalism go hand-in-hand. This is one of the greatest lies ever told. Democracy and capitalism are polar opposites.
You cannot have a functional democracy and billionaires and trillion-dollar corporate interests and Silicon Valley’s Big Tech misinformation and exploitation machinery. What we’re seeing is the clash of capitalism and democracy and capitalism is winning.
Are we past a tipping point? I don’t know. Perhaps. But we can’t think like that.
Personally, I’m going to keep working to effect change where I feel I can be effective: in creating alternative technological infrastructure to support individual freedoms and democracy.
We’ve already laid the infrastructure of techno-fascism. We’ve already created (and are creating) the panopticons. All the fascists need to do is move in and take the controls. And they will do so democratically, before destroying democracy, just as Hitler did.
And if you think the 1930s and 40s were something, remember that the most advanced tools to amplify the destructive ideologies of the time were less powerful than the computers you have in your pockets today. Today we have machine learning and are on the brink of unlocking quantum computing.
We must ensure the 2030s are not like the 1930s. Because our advanced centralised systems of data capture, classification, and prediction plus a hundred years of exponential increase in processing power (note: I do not use the word “progress”) mean the 2030s will be exponentially worse.
Whoever you are, wherever you are, we have a common enemy: the nationalist international. The problems of our time transcend national borders. The solutions must also. The systems we build must be both local and global at once. The network we must build is one of solidarity.
We created the present. We will create the future. Let’s work together to ensure that that future is the one we want to live in ourselves.”
– In 2020 and beyond, the battle to save personhood and democracy requires a radical overhaul of mainstream technology
And that’s why I’m working on building the Small Web.
https://ar.al/2020/08/07/what-is-the-small-web/
With ZERO funding from the EU and multiple rejections from NLNet/ngi (because they still don’t get it).
https://ar.al/2022/10/20/nlnet-grant-application-for-domain-rejected/
(That’s from 2022. We were also rejected in 2024 for my work on Kitten, Domain, and Place as outlined in my talk, linked below, but I was too tired to write about it again.)
https://ar.al/2024/06/24/small-web-computer-science-colloquium-at-university-of-groningen/
So for fuck’s sake, if you agree with my vision for a technological (and thus societal) future different from the hellscape we currently inhabit, and want to help us explore one possible path towards it, please fund our damn work. (Because, clearly, the EU is adamant about not doing so.)
https://small-tech.org/fund-us/
Other ways to help:
- If you know of folks that are ethically compatible who offer no strings funding, please try to secure some for us (my time is 100% spent on coding at the moment).
- If you know of conferences that pay their speakers, ask them to have me speak on the Small Web. It can be as technical or non-technical as you like and I won’t do it for free but I’m happy to accept, within reason, what they can afford (in addition to travel and accommodation being covered) and any fees received go to Small Technology Foundation, our not-for-profit.
- Help share this far and wide.
Once Domain is released and we have the first Small Web host running on small-web.org – hopefully the first of many that will be run by other folks in the future – and we start taking commercial sign-ups for Small Web places, we should eventually have the money problem solved (because apparently that’s a problem you have to solve to gain the privilege of working for the common good in our world because our system is unabashedly shortsighted).
So, yeah, anyway, g’morning! How’s your day going so far? :)
(You made it this far? You deserve a hug. And don’t worry, I’m just venting. Things will get better. It’s just frustrating swimming upstream all the time.)

SF writer @KarlSchroeder with a thought experiment on robots and shoplifting: https://kschroeder.substack.com/p/should-a-teslabot-shoplift
this frame may help you think about #capitalism, property ownership, the commons, privacy, and who benefits from laws.
under capitalism, it's always been punishable to steal to survive, but there's never *really* been punishment for ramping up oppression to maximally extract from people, aka steal from people. [see wage theft for example...] we need to think hard about this problem and act to change it, and uh, MORE PUNISHMENT is not the fix!!
(also, if we step outside of Thought Experiment Land, I will be truly shocked if autonomous robots work well enough and are cheap enough to produce in my lifetime that non-elites will own them as anything beyond a toy or attempted status marker, but you sure never do know)
Published my 3rd blog post today! It's a book list about the politics of climate risk in urban environments and ways we should think about navigating them. Will use my Bookshop.org affiliate links to donate to the California Fire Foundation’s Wildfire & Disaster Relief Fund.
My main goal, though, is to spark discussion. Join my growing community! Would love more book recommendations or topics to cover.
