Weather not been great for mothing recently. Took a punt last night after the heavy rain and whilst not numerically or diversity significant, I did attract a very handsome EYED HAWK MOTH. He wouldn't readily show me eyes on the underwing, until he was flapping for take-off (hence a bit of blur in photo 2)

A very large 5cm aeroplane shaped moth on a finger. It wings angle sharply back diagonally from its abdomen giving it an aeroplane or wide arrowhead appearance. Its wings are narrow and angular. They are a warm grey with chocolate brown smudges. Its abdomen is very chunky and is more chocolate brown. The background is blurred foliage.

The same moth described in the previous picture. This time it rests on a finger on an upturned palm. Its wing ends are blurred because it is flapping ready to take-off. The difference with this picture is that it is partially revealing its underwings which partially show an eye on each underwing. The eyes are bright blue with a black bullesye centre and black edging. Hence its name, eyed hawk moth.

Blackburnian Warbler perched on a twig high up in a tree. "The breeding male [like this one], with vivid orange in face and throat, is unmistakable; females and immatures show at least a hint of this coloration, but more important is the unique triangular facial pattern of black (or gray), also seen in all plumages." A few of my star City Nature Challenge birds, Sunday in Prospect Park. Kentucky Warbler, Least Bittern, American Bittern. The two Bitterns were amazingly out in the open and nearby!

Let’s be honest — biodiversity loss has become the neglected stepchild of environmental disasters. You’ve probably heard of climate change . We’ve got a constant drip-feed of global warming doom porn, ice caps melting, oceans rising, cities sweating, and billionaires buying bunkers in New Zealand. Climate gets the headlines. Pollution gets the silver medal because it’s mostly outsourced to poor countries. But biodiversity? The death of birds, bugs, beasts, and everything else that doesn’t look cute on an Instagram reel? That barely scrapes the media’s bottom shelf.

We pretend we care. We build butterfly gardens next to six-lane highways. We say “save the whales” while wolfing down factory-farmed beef. Meanwhile, entire species vanish and few notice unless the last one dies on a live stream. There are still plenty of rabbits in the park. Squirrels are doing backflips on the power lines. Things can’t be that bad, right? (Cue laugh track.) That’s the suburban fallacy: if wildlife, in the form of a random squirrel or a couple of rabbits, is still interrupting our barbecues, then the natural world must be doing fine.

It’s not. Not even close.

Biodiversity loss is hemorrhaging beneath our noses, and we act like a paper cut is the real problem. It’s not just about loving animals — it’s about survival. Nature isn’t an accessory to human life. It is life. Every web we unravel weakens the whole damn net. And yet, here in the land of infinite Amazon boxes and $5 throwaway gadgets, we’ve devalued the essentials so much that even the idea of resource overshoot doesn’t get airplay. If you can buy a phone charger for $1.99, how bad can things really be?

Then there’s the polycrisis — a word that sounds made-up but is all too real. It’s the ugly knot where climate chaos, collapsing ecosystems, economic fragility, and social unrest all tie together in a bow of doom. But that’s a mess for another article. Today’s concern is sharper: we are losing the natural world faster than we can document it. And we don’t seem to give a damn.

So yeah, be mad. Be outraged. Biodiversity isn’t just dying — it’s being murdered by apathy, convenience, and the relentless grind of short-term profit over long-term survival. And the worst part? We’ve barely started noticing.

Overhead shot of a large 5cm moth on a hand. It has a thick grey abdomen. It has grey-brown forewings which it holds slightly wide of its abdomen and which slope sharply behind like an arrowhead. They are scalloped across the bottom. The hindwings poke out underneath the forewings but either side of its head. It gives the appearance of being almost square and quite angular - leaf like. The wings are largely grey with a dark grey-brown band across the middle with a small white dot in the very centre of each wing.

Front on shot of a Buff Tip moth. It has a large buff coloured flat face with two tiny eyes quite low down giving the appearance of a giant forehead. It is cute and furry.

The world’s wealthiest nations are “exporting extinction” by destroying 15 times more biodiversity internationally than within their own borders.

Most wildlife habitats are being destroyed in countries with tropical forest, with wealthy countries’ demand for products such as beef, palm oil, timber and soya beans destroying biodiversity hotspots elsewhere.

Being forced to go with Plan B (no Defra support) has us coming in £12,512 short, but we can find that easily with all our freshly cancelled X/Starlink/Prime subscriptions. It was £14k yesterday and £16k before, so we’re storming through it.
