To kind of thematically fit with @jon's #velocity2025 coverage, here's some highlights of the story of Pomerania's public bike-sharing service, #Mevo:
The wild ride started when Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot Metropolitan Area (an intercommunal cooperation org) awarded a contract for setting up the system to Nextbike. Together, they promised thousands of bikes, all of them electric, for the insanely low price of 10 PLN/month for 90 minutes a day (or 0.10 PLN/min without a subscription). i'm hosting a series of six rides this summer that prefigure what our major arterial roads could/should/would be without compulsory mass automobility -- straight, smooth tracks for bicyclists and other human-powered transit! (and maybe some light rail and trolleybuses thrown in there too).

each weekend, we will tackle some of portland's "unfriendly" roads, stroads, and orphaned highways and claim a lane. i'm used to riding these roads solo during heavy traffic hours, so it would be ~*fun*~ to bike as a larger group on roads where cyclists "don't belong" or "shouldn't be on" -- laugh through their windows, spit on their tires! The saga of Rusty the HardRock #bicycle continues.

Haven't heard from the guy who has my bike all weekend. It's a holiday, so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Going to reach out tomorrow morning and make arrangements to get it back. Otherwise, I am showing up unannounced where he lives. Go from there.

As for next steps, I'm trying to find another professional #bike mechanic in #Portland #Oregon #PDX. Hopefully someone with more hands on and recent experiences - like in the last 3 or 4 years - who might be able to help me get the BB out of my steel frame.

I appreciate the offers of help I've had already. I'll be in touch. Just trying to improve my odds by tooting again.

But here's the issue. I spent the last $40 of my budget for this bike already.

I had considered buying another bike, but the owner won't go down on the price.

I haven't been able to sell my Nishiki either.

I'm unemployed right now. But I'm willing to work. I have prior retail experience. I also have a lot of customer service and IT/technical support experience. I like to work with my hands. Maybe you have a bike shop I can work at?

I just want to ride a bike, you know?

1000 out of 1200 kids in this school in #Oulu, #Finland, arrive by #bicycle, even in winter. 100-150 walk, rest by ski, kicksleds and car. This day it was -17°C, some days it can be colder than -30°C.

This is the peak of bicycle technology.

It's a bike which a local customer brought around yesterday because it's been a few years and she thought it was about time that someone had a look at it.

I know it looks terribly old fashioned, but hear me out:

This is a reasonably light-weight, efficient bike, with effective gearing and brakes. Nothing on it is unmaintainable.

This bike came out of the factory in 1982 (May 1982 according to the stamp on the rear hub). It has admittedly had a fairly good life, always having been kept indoors, but it's been ridden a lot yet needed almost no work.

The front rack had a broken non-essential part which I removed. The rubber strap / snelbinder over the rear carrier rack was broken so I replaced it, and the skirtguards were perished and falling apart so I replaced those as well. Otherwise, I've just checked that things were working and added a bit of oil. One of the pedals was running roughly until I oiled it.

Bike shops don't sell bicycles like this any more. Modern bicycles are not designed to last a whole lifetime, like these were.
