Supervising someone's thesis is a huge responsibility. You don't have to be perfect, but you should be aware that someone is trusting you. Someone might look up to you. You can hurt them and this can take years to heal. It's a responsibility and a privilege.

English is so dominant in #academia that it's easy to neglect work in other languages. About half of what I've published is in English. But, so far as I can tell, the piece that's most widely read is one I wrote in French. It's focused on the intersection of contemporary political and historical discourse with respect to Indigenous peoples in #Québec.

No, covid did not teach me that online conferences are just not working. It taught me that 2/3rds of all conferences could be fully online (though one still needs to think about best structure for them and not just transplant them without any adaptation) - and the remaining third needs to focus even more on interaction (unconferences, small workshops, hackatons...) and not the usual talks.

A good summary of Clarivate's decision to move to its monograph business to subscription- and ebook-only. Its the kind of decision a company makes when they are a monopoly, when their customers don't have a choice. Clarivate is moving to a Netflix-like, subscription only for its 700,000+ monographs: available only as ebooks through subscription, no one-time perpetual purchases, no print option. You stop subscribing, you loose access to the whole shebang.
And they've thrown in an AI assistant for readers as well.

Looks like my dear Polish friends can't afford to renew my contract after 28 February, largely because of what the Russian invasion of Ukraine has done to the cost of running a large public institution with a lot of buildings. So my new year's resolution is to find a new job, one where I get to put on pants in the morning and commute to a workplace where there are other people whom I collaborate with. 1/2
