Kind of disappointed no one mentioned pavatar, which is this but based on a URL rather than a domain and account name, the same as favicons.

Haven't seen much usage of it over the years myself, but I'm not sure if it's because the standard itself is unsuited for the task, or if it's just because the use case is unpopular tbh...
