folks who run #pihole: have you ever had a site or app break as a result of using pihole?
(for the purposes of this question, "break" includes having to perform any kind of workaround, not just a fully blocking break)

@gsuberland I can’t say for sure it’s never ever happened, but I’ve never noticed it happen.
@gsuberland yeah sometimes even allowlisting the affected domain(s) isn't enough and I have to temp disable. Thankfully my wife has come around to the value of ad blocking at the network level now and also I have a pretty good allow list that gets out of her way.
@gsuberland ive used primitive ip-blocking daemons as far back as like 2010, and they were janky af. needed constant tweaking and adjustments almost daily. stopped using them about a decade ago.
gf recently put an adguard thing on our router, and it has not had one single issue.
@gsuberland "I see you're using an ad blocker..."
@gsuberland slashdot completely breaks fown and wont load
@gsuberland It obviously depends on the blocklists you're using. Just in case something important doesn't work, I have setup an alternative connection using a different DNS in the network manager, so switching is just two mouse clicks (debian xfce). I think that happened 3-4 times over the years.
Edit: Oh and adding exceptions is also easy!
@gsuberland Yeah, we occasionally have to disable it for a few minutes. It’s rare though, maybe a couple of times a year?
@gsuberland It really depends on which blocklists you use. There are different levels of lists. Most people should use normal ones. Advanced/extreme lists often need whitelisting domains in the first week or so.
@gsuberland not strictly pihole but similar artifacts with NextDNS. Some obscure unfamiliar domain is blocked, and login or function of a web site fails. Usually the failure is opaque.
@wow_elec_tron *puts that in the positives column*
